Mercury-containing equipment (MCE) are intact devices that contain elemental mercury that is integral to its function. Universal waste MCE excludes batteries and lamps. Some common examples of MCE include:
- thermostats
- thermometers
- manometers
- barometers
The quantity of MCE on campus has greatly been reduced in recent years with over 100 MCE devices removed from campus in the past decade. Users of mercury-containing thermometers, manometers and barometers are encouraged to part ways with these devices where feasible. Larger devices, such as monometers, present a significant hazard if broken and may require an emergency response from the National Response Center (NRC).
