Below are some safety tips when handling and using gas cylinders:
- Before handling cylinders, handlers and users should be aware of all hazards. A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) will provide information on hazards as well as safe handling and storage practices.
- Always store cylinders in an upright position
- Always transport cylinders using hand trucks specifically designed for the transport of cylinders
- Store cylinders in locations that prevent them from being damaged
- Secure cylinders with a chain or belt above the midpoint, but below the shoulder of the cylinder
- Cylinders less than 18″ should be secured by stands or wall brackets
- All cylinder valves should be closed when not in use.
- Cylinders should be capped when not in use or attached to a system
- Cylinders should not be filled by any person other than cylinder suppliers
- If the purchase of cylinders is absolutely necessary, only purchase cylinders from manufacturers that will agree to take back empty cylinders. Cylinder disposal cost can be be expensive – greater than $1,000 per cylinder in some instances.
