SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University and the Contemporary American Theater Festival will host Norge Espinosa Mendoza, a playwright, poet, actor, and artist from Cuba, July 10-14. Espinosa is well known for his work in Cuba and is an active participant in the international art and theater world. He will participate in two events at Shepherd that are free and open to the public.
On Monday, July 11, at 10:30 a.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium, Mendoza will make a brief presentation on the arts and culture in Cuba and will provide some information about current issues and opportunities. This session will serve as an introduction for initiating cultural and educational exchanges between Shepherd and Cuba.
On Tuesday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium, Mendoza will participate in a forum, “A Global Perspective in Advocacy and Human Rights.” The panel discussion will also feature Carlos Mejia, Oxfam America humanitarian change goal manager; Dr. Heidi Hanrahan, associate professor of English; Dr. Timothy K. Nixon, associate professor of English; Del. Stephen Skinner, who represents the 67th delegate district in the West Virginia legislature; and Dr. Kim van Alkemade, professor of English at Shippensburg University and the author of the New York Times bestseller historical fiction novel “Orphan #8” (Harper Collins, 2015).
