SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society, is sponsoring a night of poetry on Friday, March 9, from 6-9 p.m. in the Jefferson Room in White Hall. Shepherd students, along with students from high schools in Jefferson and Berkeley counties and Washington County, Maryland, are invited to participate.
“It’s an event to celebrate poetry and give students a venue to share their work with no judgment,” said Dr. Heidi Hanrahan, associate professor of English and Sigma Tau Delta advisor. “They don’t have to worry about being told their work is good or bad, they’ll just share their work and get support.
“They’re also going to have what’s called a bad poetry contest,” she added. “Bad poetry events are exactly what they sound like—sharing some of the cheesiest or worst kind of work. That’s the fun of it, the laughter.”
Hanrahan said the event is free and will include snacks and door prizes. Shepherd’s Sigma Tau Delta chapter received a $450 project grant from the international organization to host the event. Members of the Shepherd chapter are attending the March 21-24 annual convention in Cincinnati and will give a presentation on how the poetry night went.
