The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace concert
The Masterworks Chorale will perform contemporary Welsh composer Karl Jenkins’ brilliant, disturbing and beautiful The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. It was commissioned for the Millenium celebration and first performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall in April 2000. The CD of that performance was eerily released on September 10, 2001, the eve of 9/11. While this mass was originally dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo crisis, the music and the message clearly have great poignancy and relevance today.
Adding to the special nature of our concert will be Dr. Eric Waggoner, executive director of the West Virginia Humanities Council, who will describe the Council’s West Virginia Cemeteries Project and will profile several veterans. This project has involved students from Grafton High School, in coordination with graduate level researchers from WVU’s Public History program, researching and creating summaries of the service and lives of veterans interred in the state’s national cemeteries in Grafton and Pruntytown. The Veterans Administration Legacy Grant Program has supported the project.
