SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War will present a lecture by Dr. Jonathan Berkey, professor of history at Concord University, on Thursday, February 7, at 7 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium. The lecture, titled “The Foreshadowing: John Brown’s Raid and the Civilians’ Civil War in Jefferson County, 1859-1865,” is free and open to the public.

Berkey’s main field of study is the American Civil War. His dissertation examined how civilians in Virginia’s lower Shenandoah Valley coped with the complex challenges posed by living in a contested border region during the war. Future projects include writing a chapter on Confederate women in a collection of essays on the Shenandoah Valley in the Civil War, and editing a manuscript on borderlands in the American Civil War.
