SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Criminal Justice will kick off its spring Criminal Justice Lecture Series with a talk by Legal Aid attorney Kelly Beck titled “Expungement Law in West Virginia: How to Expunge a Criminal Record” on Wednesday, February 12, from 11:10 a.m.-noon in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Beck’s presentation will focus on expungement law in West Virginia following the changes that became effective in June 2019. It will address the requirements that must be met prior to filing to expunge a criminal record and what crimes under the statute cannot be expunged. Attendees will learn where to access information and pro se documents in West Virginia.
Beck is a 1986 graduate of West Virginia University College of Law and. In 2008, she joined Legal Aid as the supervising attorney of the Martinsburg Office. In addition to her supervisory duties, Beck provides legal assistance to low income clients on poverty law issues. She was the recipient of the Legal Aid of West Virginia Leadership Award for Leadership Resulting In Significant Progress Toward Seeking Justice, Changing Lives in 2018. In 2019, she received the Making A Difference Award for her work with clients under the West Virginia Works Legal Support project.
