SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Two members of Shepherd University’s Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda won awards during the 2020 West Virginia Phi Beta Lambda Leadership Conference that was schedule for late March but was moved to an online format due to COVID-19.
Jacob Klepp-Egge, a business administration major from Westminster, Maryland, won first place for a presentation in Emerging Business Issues, and Bridgette Aguilar-Dishman, a psychology major from Berryville, Virginia, took second place in Statistical Analysis and third place in Justice Administration. In addition, Klepp-Egge was reelected secretary of the state chapter.
Klepp-Egge made a presentation on the topic of how the political climate affects businesses.
“It’s a very important topic today,” Klepp-Egge said. “Presenting online was an interesting experience, and something we have never done before. West Virginia was one of the first states to hold their leadership conference this year and the first to hold it online, which we pitched to the national center, and they have adopted a similar format for their National Leadership Conference in June.”
Aguilar-Dishman took tests on Statistical Analysis and Justice Administration. She said the main challenge was having to take the tests while they were being proctored via Zoom.
“It’s an honor to have gotten awards in my events, especially given the circumstances the tests were taken in,” Aguilar-Dishman said. “Participating in an online competition is a one in a million experience and I think that the online aspect of it was the real test not the events themselves.”
Both Klepp-Egge and Aguilar-Dishman are eligible for National Leadership Conference, which will be an online event.
