SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s School of Music is listed as one of the top 100 Great Value Colleges in the country for undergraduate music majors. Shepherd ranks 66 on the list, which was compiled by Great Value Editors from an initial pool of nearly 270 colleges and universities accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music with tuition expenses of less than $25,000 per year.

The Great Value Colleges website says, “When researching the best music schools in the country, many hopeful music majors are faced with the high tuition and low acceptance rates of major music conservatories like Juilliard without realizing that there are a plethora of accessible and cheap colleges with good music programs.”

Shepherd’s listing points to a student to faculty ratio of 14:1, individualized instruction from distinguished faculty members, a focus on academic and instrumental preparation at the undergraduate level, and a low tuition and fee rate of $7,784 per year as benefits.

“The faculty and staff of the School of Music are thrilled for this exciting news,” said Dr. Kurtis Adams, director, School of Music. “It is a testament to the extremely high-quality education and experiences music majors receive at Shepherd for an affordable price.”

Shepherd offers a Bachelor of Music in Performance with concentrations in instrumental, voice, piano, and jazz; a Bachelor of Arts in music with concentrations in composition, general music, and piano pedagogy; and a Bachelor of Music Education with vocal and instrumental concentrations.

With the restrictions on travel and large in-person indoor gatherings due to COVID-19, the School of Music will only be accepting video-recorded auditions for admission to its degree programs this year. Audition recordings should be submitted by March 1, 2021 for scholarship consideration.
