Scholarships and Awards

Scholarships available to psychology majors

The following scholarships are available to students majoring in Psychology. There is no application needed; recipients are chosen by the Psychology faculty. For more information, please contact Dr. Christopher Lovelace at clovelac@shepherd.edu.

The C. Brown and Hazel M. Hendricks Scholarship ($863)

Description: The C. Brown and Hazel M. Hendricks Scholarship is designated for students majoring in home economics and family life, or related fields such as psychology, arts and music. This endowment was established by Hazel Hendricks ’34 to honor her and her husband’s high regards for a Shepherd education, especially in the field of home economics.

Requirements: Psychology major, 2.50 GPA, and full-time status.

The Tri-State Civitan Scholarship ($550)

Description: The Tri-State Civitan Scholarship is designated for students from West Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania who are majoring in nursing, social work, or psychology. This endowment was created by William H. McLean with the continued support from the Tri-State Civitan Club.

Requirements: Psychology major, 2.50 GPA, and financial need.

The Kenneth Riley Memorial Scholarship ($50)

Description: The Kenneth Riley Memorial Scholarship is designated for students majoring in psychology. This endowment was established by Ursula Riley in memory of her husband, Kenneth, a professor in education at Shepherd College beginning in 1956.

Requirements: Psychology major, 2.50 GPA, and full-time status.

Awards available to psychology majors

Psychology program awards are given to Psychology majors based on their contributions to the department and their fellow students. Recipients are selected by psychology faculty.

Psychology Leadership Award ($100)

The Psychology Student Leadership Award is presented to a Senior Psychology Major who has provided exemplary leadership through the promotion of departmental values and ethics in and out of the classroom.

The Psychology Student Leadership Award is presented on Student Recognition Day each spring. An announcement for nominations is usually distributed in January or February.

Criteria for Award:

  1. Student (peer or self) nominated.
  2. Formal leadership role in Psi Chi or Psychology Club and/or active leadership within the classroom and other psychology events (e.g., Dean’s Council, SGA, Student Life Council, student rep to committees, Relay for Life involvement.)
  3. Must graduate May, August, or December of year awarded.
