SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University is cutting the ribbon at its new Veterans Center at 201 South Princess St. on Wednesday, February 10, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The center is located in the newly-renovated Shepherd Free School and was furnished and equipped through a $12,000 donation from the Shepherd Fund Leadership Giving Circle.
Dr. Sylvia Manning, interim president, and Matt Garman, Shepherd University Student Veterans Organization president, will cut the ribbon. The event is free and open to the public.
Mary Beth Myers, veterans support services coordinator, said the center has five computers, a printer, a lounge area, a kitchenette, and an administrative office. Myers said veterans have unique needs because they are often older students who are transitioning from the military to civilian life. The center will give them a place to meet with other veterans to help them through the transition and a place to study.
The center is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Student veterans are volunteering their time to keep the center open, and Myers has office hours there on Tuesdays and Thursdays to provide university services.
