SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s theater program is presenting the play “Dry Land” by Ruby Rae Spiegel on April 1 and 2, and April 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Contemporary Arts Marinoff Theater. The play, which contains mature content, is free and open to the public. A post-show discussion will take place following the April 7 performance with Ty Hallmark of Advocates for Youth, a D.C.-based nonprofit dedicated to issues of adolescent reproductive and sexual health.
The play is set mainly in the locker room of a high school swim team. It centers on a friendship between Ester, a competitive swimmer who just changed high schools but is most worried about winning a college scholarship, and Amy, an established swimmer who is determined to get an abortion. Spiegel was in her final year at Yale when she finished writing the play. It was produced in New York in 2014.
Dr. Erin Bone Steele, adjunct theater professor, is directing the Shepherd production, which features an all-student cast and crew, including Kaitlyn Miller, Coalton; Amy Gabbert, Keyser; John McCarrick, Charles Town; Austin Susman, Charleston; Henry de Buchananne and Megan Murray, both of Harpers Ferry; and Jennifer Dickey, Mount Airy, Maryland.
