SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Anyone interested in pursuing a graduate degree that is not available at Shepherd University can learn about master’s and doctoral programs offered through West Virginia University during a graduate studies information day on Thursday, April 6, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in Erma Ora Byrd Hall.
Dr. Scott Beard, associate provost and dean of graduate studies at Shepherd, said the event will help Shepherd students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members see what programs are available at master’s and doctoral levels and learn what they will need to do to prepare for these programs.
“We thought this is a great way for Shepherd students to take advantage of some other advanced study programs that are in West Virginia and to look at scholarship, internship, and assistantship opportunities that these programs offer,” Beard said.
“An undergraduate degree is a really worthwhile goal, but in many instances for highly technical fields or to get the higher than entry level job that students may want, the master’s degree is really the door-opener,” Beard added. “It’s really, in a sense, become what the baccalaureate degree was a couple of generations ago—the key to opening the next step in a student’s career.”
The schedule for the day includes an 11 a.m. opening session featuring remarks by Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix, Shepherd president, and Dr. Joyce McConnell, WVU provost and vice president for academic affairs, followed by a presentation by Dr. Lisa Salati, WVU vice president for graduate education, on how to prepare for graduate school admission.
Those interested in pursuing a master’s or doctorate degree can learn more about individual programs between noon-3 p.m. in the Erma Ora Byrd Hall lobby. Information about a variety of Ph.D. programs will be available, including biomedical sciences, biochemistry and molecular biology, cancer cell biology, cellular and integrative physiology, clinical and translational science, exercise physiology, immunology and microbial pathogenesis, physical therapy, and neuroscience.
Master’s programs represented will include biomedical science, clinical and translational science, exercise physiology, health science, occupational therapy, and pathologist’s assistant.
