SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Global Shepherd Students organization is hosting an International Culture Week March 19-23. The weeklong series of events, which are free and open to the public, grew out of the desire by Shepherd’s international students to share the culture of their home countries.
Throughout the week, tables with information focusing on regions of the world will be set up from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Student Center Ram’s Den and Scarborough Library. Each day a different region will be highlighted and events will take place surrounding that region. Monday the focus will be on the Middle East and North Africa, Tuesday on Africa, Wednesday on the Americas, Thursday on Europe, and Friday on Asia and the Pacific.
Events scheduled for the week include:
Monday, March 19
- 2 p.m., Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium, lecture by visiting scholar Dr. Al Dhafiri, faculty of arts and social sciences, Kuwait University, who is on sabbatical with the Shepherd social work program.
- 7 p.m., Student Center Storer Ballroom, Dr. Syed Haque, medical internist and imam of the Islamic Society of Frederick, will give a talk on Islam, followed by a student panel discussion.
Tuesday, March 20
- 7 p.m., Scarborough Library room 256, “Talk from a Refugee” by Siriki Diabate, Shepherd intensive English language recruiter.
- 8 p.m., Student Center Storer Ballroom, African food tasting sponsored by the Pan African Student Union.
Wednesday, March 21
- Noon-1 p.m., Scarborough Library room 256, a presentation on El Salvador by Shepherd student Henry Navarrete Mendez.
- 6-9 p.m., Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education conference room, Latino dance and food sponsored by Alianza.
Thursday, March 22
- Noon-1 p.m., Student Center Rumsey Room, Language Cafés—Conversational Brown Bag Lunch featuring French, Spanish, and German.
- 7 p.m., Erma Ora Byrd auditorium, film screening of the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, “Pan’s Labyrinth.”
Friday, March 23
- Noon-1 p.m., Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium, talk on Bangladesh by Shepherd student Ashley Gomes.
- 4-5 p.m., Reynolds Hall, Filipino Dance sponsored by Cultural Organization of Filipino Americans.
