SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Students have begun arriving on campus as Shepherd University prepares for the start of a new school year. Classes start August 26 and students begin moving into residence halls August 23, but a group of students is spending an additional week on campus participating in the Emerging Leaders in Service program, which gives first-year students the opportunity to become acclimated to campus, refine their leadership skills, and volunteer at local nonprofit agencies.
About 40 students and 10 staff will participate in the 20th Annual Day of Service Wednesday, August 21, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. They will divide into groups and volunteer at the Shepherd University Agricultural Innovation Center (Tabler Farm), Shepherd’s Spring, Martinsburg Garden of Promise, Burke Street Elementary School in Martinsburg, and Green Hill African American Cemetery. Volunteers will help with a variety of tasks, including grounds work, planting flowers and vegetables, and repairing trails.
New students will move into residence halls on Thursday, August 22, and on Friday, October 23 will attend a convocation at 9 a.m. in the Wellness Center followed by orientation activities.
