Scarborough Library to host November 11 reading and discussion with Pate and Kushin

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Scarborough Library is hosting a reading with Dr. James Pate, assistant professor of English, and Dr. Matthew Kushin, associate professor of mass communications, on Monday, November 11, at 11 a.m. in the Community Reading Room.

Kushin will read from his just-published book “Teach Social Media: A Plan for Creating a Course Your Students Will Love,” and Pate will read the short story “The Off Season,” which will be published in Déraciné Magazine this December. They will take questions and have a discussion with the audience about writing, publishing, and social media.

Kushin writes Social Media Syllabus, a popular blog and resource for social media educators. His work has been published in journals such as Mass Communication and Society, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, New Media & Society, the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and Journal of Public Relations Education.

Pate has been published at Black Warrior Review, New Delta Review, storySouth, Occulum, Superstition Review, and Berkeley Fiction Review. His collection of essays on contemporary Gothic poetry, titled “Flowers Among the Carrion,” was published by Actions Books in 2016. His novel “Speed of Life” was published by Fahrenheit Press in 2017.
