SHEPHERDSTOWN, — Shepherd University’s Department of Political Science, Global Studies, and Geography will present a Teach-in on Police Reform on Monday, June 29, from 3:30-5 p.m. on Zoom. The event is free and open to the public.
Panelists will include Janay Gasparini, assistant professor of criminal justice; Dr. Samuel Greene, assistant professor of political science; Dr. Lindsey Levitan, associate professor of psychology; Jordan Jalil, a political science and economics major from Charles Town and Truman Scholarship finalist; and David Washington, a social worker in Washington County, Maryland. Dr. Stephanie Slocum-Schaffer, associate professor of political science, will moderate the discussion.
During the teach-in, Gasparini will look at police reform from a criminal justice point of view and her experience working with the police; Greene will discuss recent police reforms which have taken place in Latin America and what we can learn from that for the United States; Levitan will talk about the psychology of police tasks such as stereotyping, prejudice, and shooter bias; Jordan will discuss qualified immunity for police officers, the topic of her essay for the Truman Scholarship; and Washington will speak as a social worker dealing with tasks often now performed by police officers but which could be done by social workers.
