SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University has selected Glenmark Holding LLC, based in Morgantown, as its partner to redevelop property on the north end of the university’s East Campus, near the Potomac River.

Shepherd initiated a request for proposals for a developer to join in a public-private partnership to reimagine the East Campus area that includes Kenamond, Turner, and Gardiner halls, and the dining hall, each of which was built prior to 1965. Glenmark Holding was selected to develop this area into a new gateway to showcase the university to visitors entering the campus and town via the Potomac River bridge from Maryland.

Possible uses include development of facilities for: extended-stay hospitality, an alumni center, healthcare services, support services, and new accommodations for academic, residential, commercial, recreation, and entertainment venues. The project team will continue to work with the task force that assisted in the RFP process, which included faculty, staff, and community representatives.

“The university and Glenmark are committed to promoting ‘The Shepherd Image,’ expanding ‘The Student Experience,’ improving ‘The Employee Experience,’ and enhancing ‘The Campus Environment,’ all components of our current campus strategic plan,” said Shepherd University President Mary J.C. Hendrix. “We anticipate a partnership with Glenmark that will embrace Shepherd’s core values and further its mission via a collaborative approach.”

“We are grateful and enthusiastic to develop a true partnership with Shepherd and the Shepherdstown community to achieve goals, objectives, and improvements throughout the campus,” said Mark R. Nesselroad, Glenmark’s CEO. “As a strategic partner, we desire to embrace the community and assist Shepherd in generating revenue and creating an aesthetic, modern, and physically appealing environment that energizes the goals of the university for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and donors.”

Input from campus and community stakeholders will be an important component of creating the specific development and design plans, and Shepherd will provide public notification of public meetings and any additional methods to be established for that input.
