SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University School of Music Community Music Division is accepting registration just in time for the holidays for spring 2021 classes. Virtual Early Childhood Music classes for children 18 months-8 years with Frauke Higgins will take place via Zoom beginning in January 2021 and running for five weeks. The Community Music Division is also offering a self-paced prerecorded music theory class for beginners taught by alumnus Anthony Stoika.
Musical Discoveries for 18 months-3 years old, with caregiver, will run Fridays from 10-10:30 a.m. and Music for Preschoolers, for ages 3-5 with caregiver will run Fridays from 10:45-11:15 a.m. Both classes will be offered January 15-February 12, 2021, and February 26-March 26, 2021. Recorder class for ages 6-8 years will be offered Tuesdays from 4:45-5:15 p.m. from January 19-February 16, 2021. Tuition is $62 per session.
Musical Discoveries will introduce students to the rudiments of music. The class will explore songs, echo songs, creative movement, rhymes, finger-play, and listening exercises. Music for Preschoolers is designed to prepare the child for later instrumental studies or voice lessons. The children will learn about rhythm, tempo, melodic movement, major-minor, and will play listening games.
The Introduction to Music Theory class consists of 10 prerecorded lectures and is designed for a high school student or adult beginner musician who is interested in learning music theory. The course will cover everything from the fundamentals of pitch and rhythm to voice leading tonic and dominant chords. Tuition is $140.
