SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Members of the Shepherd University Student Nurses’ Association (SUSNA) participated in two community projects in November. SUSNA partnered with Faith, Feeding, Freedom (FFF) to support a Women’s Day event in Martinsburg. SUSNA also organized a successful canned food drive for Thanksgiving dinner baskets.
Faith, Feeding, Freedom is a nonprofit organization that feeds the homeless and hungry every Friday in front of the Martinsburg Public Library. On November 20, Shepherd nursing students helped feed a warm lunch to more than 75 people and provided bras, soap, basic hygiene supplies, and clothing. Student nurses also offered free blood pressure checks to the attendees, who have limited access to health care.
“November 20 was a fantastic day where SUSNA could connect with other organizations and learn endless ways to help the community,” said Maria “MJ” Acevedo-Cabrera, Shepherdstown, SUSNA president. “It was an opening door experience to continue to partner with the Faith, Feeding, Freedom and help those in need as much as possible. I am excited for what the future holds and our involvement with FFF and the community.”
“I had an amazing time with a magnificent group of ladies,” said Shena Morris. “It was a wonderful and well-received event by those in our community.”
“The event provided opportunity for outreach, physical and emotional support, and was a great learning experience for the eight Shepherd nursing students, who took a few hours away from studying for finals to give back to the regional community,” said Dr. Lisa Zerull, assistant professor of nursing.
