SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVShepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War welcomes Jonathan Noyalas for “Never to be Forgotten: What the Battle of Cool Spring Reveals about the War’s Impact on Soldiers & Families,” an author talk at 7 p.m. on December 5.

Noyala, who teaches history at Shenandoah University, will discuss his book “The Blood-Tinted Waters of the Shenandoah: the 1864 Valley Campaign’s Battle of Cool Spring, July 17-18, 1864”.

Both his Author Talk and new book are based on more than a decade of research into the Battle of Cool Spring, which marked the end of Union general Horatio Wright’s pursuit of Confederate general Jubal Early’s army from the gates of the nation’s capital to the banks of the Shenandoah River.

“[This talk] covers how battlefields are more than places to explore tactics, strategic outcomes, or political consequences,” said Noyalas, “they offer sobering reminders of the multifarious ways battle impacts soldiers and their families.”

Noyalas has received numerous awards for his teaching and scholarship, including Shenandoah University’s Exemplary Teaching Award for the First Year Seminar, Shenandoah’s Wilkins Award, and the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia’s Outstanding Faculty Award. He currently directs the Shenandoah University McCormick Civil War Institute.

In addition to his work at Shenandoah, Noyalas has written or edited sixteen books and authored over 100 essays, articles, chapters, and reviews for various scholarly and popular publications.

He has consulted on many public history projects with organizations such as the National Park Service, Shenandoah Battlefields Foundation, and American Battlefield Trust. and appeared on C-SPAN’s American History TV, NPR’s “With Good Reason,” and PCN.
