Student Awards
Shepherd University chemistry students are highly valued by their peers and by Shepherd faculty members. Awards are given to students each year. Recipients are awarded a cash prize and their names are engraved on a plaque that is displayed on the 3rd floor in Byrd Science Center.
The John Conard Awards
The John Conard Award is given to outstanding students majoring in chemistry.
- Best Sophomore – Student must have completed (prior to the spring award date) both General Chemistry I and II and have completed between 30-60 credit hours in either the Fall or Spring semester.
- Best Graduating Senior – Student must be graduating in either December, May, or August of that year.
- Best Student Researcher – Student must have completed their research at Shepherd under the direction of a chemistry faculty advisor.

The John F. Schmidt Award
This award is presented to a student majoring in chemistry. The recipient will have demonstrated significant accomplishment at Shepherd University and potential for contributing to the field in the future. Emphasis will be given to students’ success in physical and general chemistry class and lab work. The award was endowed by former students to honor Dr. Schmidt, faculty member in chemistry from 1968 to 2008.

The John Diehl Award
This award is presented to a student majoring in chemistry. The recipient will have demonstrated outstanding achievement in both analytical chemistry and biochemistry class and lab work and/or research.
