Words to Know for Shepherd University
At Shepherd, we sometimes have our own special lingo that we use amongst one another! To get you into the know, here’s a cheat sheet at some of the most common terms! If something has multiple names, the most common will be used and additional names will be listed in ( )’s!
General Knowledge:
Celebrity Row
Celebrity Row is the special length of spaces outside of the Thacher and Shaw residence halls. These parking spots are reserved for Shepherd University Faculty and Staff, though you can use the roundabout to pick up other students or to unload for move-in!
Dining Dollars
Dining Dollars are virtual money that our students use to buy things like items from the Riverside Market store and to pay for printing at Scarborough Library. Some meal plans include Dining Dollars in their package for your student to use, though if you’d like to, you can add some to your Rambler ID card yourself!
Graduate Assistant (GA)
Graduate Assistants are workers on campus that are also completing classes to get their Graduate degree! Each GA has a special assignment for where they work on campus, be it Residence Life, Student Affairs, or any number of offices.
Hybrid Course (HYA, HYS)
Hybrid courses have the distinction of meeting in person and online! For the coding, if there is an A, it is Asynchronous (does not have a set meeting time.) Synchronous, however, does have a set meeting time and is signified by an S in the code!
JC the Ram
JC the Ram is Shepherd University’s living mascot! He is housed in Tabler Farm and visits campus for football games and other events!
Online Course (OLA, OLS)
Online courses are available for students to take from the luxury of their own room! For the coding, if there is an A, it is Asynchronous (does not have a set meeting time.) Synchronous, however, does have a set meeting time and is signified by an S in the code!
Program Board (PB)
PB is the body in charge of student events on campus! They are by students, for students! Some events they host are Paint Nights, Open Mic Nights, and trip. Most of their events (minus the trips) are free for students to partake in! Follow their social media for updates on events @shepherdpb!
Rambo
Rambo is Shepherd University’s mascot who you may see at sporting events and other events needing school spirit! If you ever see Rambo at an event, be sure to say “hi” and even ask for a selfie together!
Ramily
Our Ram Family! (See what we did there.) Everyone who attends Shepherd University and their support systems are part of the Ramily! We hope that you’re proud of your choice in becoming a member of our campus community!
Title IX
The Title IX Office specializes in helping keep our Shepherd students safe while on campus. If any students have issues containing discrimination or assault, this is the office that they should get into contact with. Once in contact with Title IX, the student will be directed to any additional resources they could need.
Locations:
Each location includes a two-letter code that is used to signify the building! To see where each building is, a campus map is attached at the bottom of this section.
Butcher Center (Butcher, BC)
The Butcher Center is connected to our Wellness Center and hosts practice spaces for the majority of our sports teams! Coaches’ offices are also located within the Butcher Center.
Byrd Science Center (BY)
The Byrd Science Center hosts almost all of our university’s science classes (except for some lab classes that can be found in Stutzman-Slonaker.) With three levels, there are a variety of science classes you can take within the Byrd Science Center!
Center for Contemporary Arts I (CO)
In this half of the Center for Contemporary Arts (the half closer to Potomac Place) are all photography classes, theater classes, and most art classes. There are plenty of spaces to create in the Dark Room, the Photo Studio, the Painting Studio, and more. Most faculty offices are on the second floor. There are also plenty of spaces in the open concept to sit, relax, and create.
Center for Contemporary Arts II (CE)
Housed in this half of the Center for Contemporary Arts is the Marinoff Theater, where the theater department hosts their productions, as well as the Phaze 2 Gallery, where students and outside artists hold exhibitions for the public. Also included on this half of the Center for Contemporary Arts are more spaces for creation, some offices, and class spaces in the basement level underneath the theater. Also hosted in the Center for Contemporary Arts II is the Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF.)
Erma Ora Byrd Hall (EOB, NU)
Erma Ora Byrd Hall houses mostly the nursing and physical education classes on Shepherd’s campus. We also have the prestigious white coat ceremony here for those students who complete the requirements of the nursing program!
Frank Center (CA, Frank)
The Frank Center is the location on campus for all music classes! Besides music classes for students, the Frank Center also has classes for community members, performances from Shepherd ensembles, and even hosts the performances of the Appalachian Heritage Festival that happens each fall!
Games Zone
The Games Zone is located on the second floor of the Student Center on campus! Within our Games Zone, you can go bowling, play arcade games, play pool with friends, and even check out available board games!
Gardiner Hall (GA)
Gardiner Hall houses important resources on campus, including Financial Aid, Counseling Services, Multicultural Student Affairs, Title IX, and International Student Affairs.
Knutti [kah-new-tee] Hall (KH)
Knutti is the hall on the four-corner intersection closest to town! This hall houses classes for English, Communications, and Education! If you have the chance to take a class in this building, don’t let all the floors and stairs confuse you! Boasting 4 amazing levels of learning, Knutti is one of the most jam-packed buildings on campus for classes!
Martinsburg Center (MC)
The Martinsburg Center is surprisingly not even on our main campus in Shepherdstown- it’s located in Martinsburg, WV! This is an outreach center that hosts mostly general education classes for students to take. Also, the Martinsburg Center is where local high school students interested in completing college-level math and English courses can do so depending on their high school’s programs!
McMurran Hall (McMurran)
McMurran Hall is a staple piece of Shepherd University as it can be seen within our logo. Though classes are no longer held within this building, the Alumni Association works inside and activities by clubs and organizations can typically be seen out front of it!
Popodicon
The Popodicon is a special place on campus, reserved for only the fanciest of events. Historically, Popodicon has been the residence of Shepherd University’s Presidents. The University often holds special events at this historic location.
Potomac Place (PL, Potomac)
Potomac Place is one of the residential buildings on campus (and the newest one at that!) Sometimes students also say Potomac Place when referring to Riverside Market, so be sure when mentioning Potomac you know whether it is to eat or sleep! Potomac Place has 5 levels as the tallest building on campus with floors 2-5 reserved for resident housing!
Ram’s Den (RD, The Den, Ram’s)
Ram’s Den is located inside of the Student Center on our campus. Residing above the Bookstore and underneath the Games Zone, Ram’s Den is the premier location on campus for all-you-can-eat dining! Come here to hang out with friends, eat delicious food, drink Pepsi™ products, and unwind!
Reynolds Hall (RY)
Reynolds Hall is located between Knutti and McMurran halls along the walkway leading to the town center! Theatrical performances by the Rude Mechanicals as well as other organizations are located within Reynolds Hall. The local community also uses Reynolds Hall for monthly movie screenings!
Riverside Market (Riverside, The Market, Potomac)
Do you want some yummy food near where you live on campus? Then look no further than Riverside! They’re constantly trying new foods to keep up with what students would want! You could even live in the SAME building as Riverside if you’re a resident of Potomac Place- imagine taking the elevator to the ground floor to get some fresh food! They also have a market section with many name-brand foods available for purchase with Dining Dollars!
Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education (CL, Byrd Center)
The Byrd Center offers a number of different meeting and event spaces that are available for reservation. They also house an auditorium that is used for speeches, panels, and film viewings as well as offices and classrooms. The Byrd Center also hosts its own events which you can find more about HERE.
Scarborough Library (LB)
Scarborough Library is within the heart of campus, directly across the street from the Student Center. Beyond checking out books and resources from the library, you can also reserve study spaces, get tutoring in the basement, and utilize the printing locations to get documents for classes.
Shepherd University Bookstore
On the ground level of the Student Center is the Shepherd University Bookstore. In here, you can pick up any books you ordered at the beginning of the semester! They also have a wide array of products including snacks, Shepherd apparel, Apple™ products, and more! Be sure to stop in throughout the semester as their items change and older products go on sale! Visit their website HERE to purchase books and items online that can be picked up within the store hours!
Snyder Science Center (SN)
Snyder Science Center is attached to the Byrd Science Center. It houses additional science courses and faculty offices. Organizations like the Shepherd Environmental Organization host meetings and events within the Snyder Science Center as well.
Student Center (CC)
The Student Center is the access point for student life on Shepherd’s campus. Within the Student Center, you can find offices for the Student Success Center, Student Affairs, Program Board, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and the Student Government Association. The bottom floor hosts the Shepherd University Bookstore where you can buy any supplies you’d need on campus. On the first floor, we have dining locations with the Ram’s Den and Fireside Bistro (proudly serving Starbucks!) The second floor hosts meeting rooms as well as the Games Zone. The third floor is dedicated to the Storer Ballroom where events like the Homecoming Dance, the Drag Show, and other large-scale events take place! If you’re looking to be involved in campus life, this is definitely the place for you!
Student Success Center (SSC)
The Student Success Center, located within the Student Center, helps any student reach their goals while at Shepherd University. The SSC hosts multiple Success Coaches who specialize in making sure students are on track and navigate students through different on-campus resources. Off of the SSC is the Student Success Academy, an effort to keep students on track through weekly one-on-one meetings with coaches!
Stutzman-Slonaker Hall (SS)
Stutzman-Slonaker Hall primarily houses Science labs, math classes, and graduate-level courses! Also housed within Stutzman-Slonaker is the commuter lounge, a dedicated space for commuters to relax in privacy while on campus!
Tabler Farm (TF)
Shepherd University’s Agricultural Innovation Center at Tabler Farm is now certified organic by the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association. Tabler Farm hosts crops, animals, bees, and more. This farm is also used as learning opportunities for Shepherd students via class or organization!
The Wellness Center (Wellness, WE)
The Wellness Center is a staple of campus life and the community. Open for students for free and for the community at a cost, The Wellness Center has a track, basketball courts, racquetball rooms, a pool, and plenty of workout equipment. White Hall (WH)
White Hall is the location on campus for primarily Psychology, Accounting, Sociology, Economics, and History classes! White Hall is located just past Knutti Hall and is across the street from C Lot.
