What is Instructional Design and What Services Does the Instructional Designer Provide?
Instructional design focuses on the best pedagogical methods to create effective learning environments. The ID can:
- evaluate the quality of existing courses
- analyze the needs of online courses/programs/materials
- design, develop, and implement courses or materials that are effective, efficient and engaging
- help organize and stage online content to improve the student learning experience
- provide professional development utilizing Brightspace tools
Why Should I Work with an Instructional Designer?
Working together with an ID can help faculty:
- create measurable learning in courses
- improve student learning outcomes
- maintain digital fluency and teach 21st century skills
- improve the quality of online courses/programs
While research shows that an ID can help faculty develop high-quality online courses (Olesova & Campbell, 2019), an ID can work with faculty teaching in any modality to improve both the instructor and student experience.

Can the ID just build my class site?
Since faculty provide the course content and the ID provides the designs, the work of instructional design is collaborative. Faculty and the ID work together to build and evaluate functionality of the designs.
I’m not great with technology, can the ID help me design my online course?
Absolutely! The ID can provide a range of designs for beginner, intermediate, or advanced users of technology.
