Historic Shepherdstown
Come And Stay A While!
Shepherd University is located in historic Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Situated along the Potomac River in the beautiful lower Shenandoah Valley, Shepherdstown is the oldest town in West Virginia.
The downtown historic district is a small 18th century colonial village with unique architecture. Many of the well-preserved buildings were standing when General George Washington called local troops to join him in Boston for the Revolutionary War.
Shepherdstown is lined with over 28 one-of-a-kind shops and more than 20 fine dining and casual restaurants that include indoor and outdoor seating. You will find they are distinguished by serving a variety of cuisine—Italian, French, Thai, American, German, Middle Eastern, Chinese, fusion and Appalachian–many prepared with local ingredients.
In the summer, the town joins Shepherd University in hosting the acclaimed Contemporary American Theater Festival, which is an annual festival of new plays by American playwrights. Throughout the year, there is a wide variety of music performances, film, and acts, to include live music at local restaurants and pubs.
Nearby to Shepherdstown you can visit Civil War sites at Harpers Ferry or Antietam, you can hike or bike the C&O Canal path and you can enjoy rafting, tubing or kayaking on the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.
