Multi-Factor Authentication
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Starting on March 1, 2023, IT Services will begin to roll out Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for logging into systems.
Below are some questions and their answers about this technology implementation.
Why are we implementing MFA?
MFA, or multi-factor authentication, is a method of securing your account that combines something you know (your username and password) with something you have (an authentication code provided by a trusted device).
Shepherd University values the security of your online accounts. Implementing MFA will provide an extra layer of security to protect you and the sensitive data stored in your account.
Once activated, you will only be able to access your account by providing both your password and a security code provided to you by the Microsoft Authenticator app, through text message, or via a phone call.
Is MFA hard to set up or use?
Instructions for setting up MFA are here (In PDF format)
When you log in, you’ll simply use the app or receive a text message with a code to type in. It takes just a few extra seconds, but it provides additional peace of mind knowing your Shepherd Office 365 account is much more secure.
Protecting your Security Code
It is critical that you protect both your password and your generated codes. Just as you should never share your password with anyone, you should also never share the generated security codes with anyone.
A common phishing scam is to request that you generate a code to “validate your account” and provide it to someone claiming to be from Microsoft. Microsoft will NEVER contact you and ask for an authenticator code. These requests are always an attempt to compromise your account. Please don’t respond to these requests and report them to IT.
