Interlibrary Loan Policy
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a free service through which Shepherd University students, faculty, staff, and Scarborough Society members may request books, articles, and audio/visual materials unavailable in Scarborough Library.
The following requests will not be processed:
- Materials available at Scarborough Library
- Textbooks
- Books required for courses
- Materials to be placed on Course Reserve
Loan Periods
The lending institution determines the loan period and can recall interlibrary loan items anytime.
Scarborough Library’s future borrowing privileges are jeopardized when Shepherd University patrons do not return interlibrary loan items on time.
Renewals
If you need an item for a more extended period, you should request a renewal BEFORE the item is due.
It is up to the lending institution to decide whether an item may be renewed.
To request an ILL renewal, contact:

Fines for Late, Lost, or Damaged Interlibrary Loan Items
All overdue interlibrary loan items will be assessed a fine of $1.00 per day, with no maximum limit. ILL overdue fines apply to all patron categories: faculty, staff, students, and Scarborough Society members.
When interlibrary loans are not returned, and fines remain unpaid, the patron’s library privileges, ability to register for Shepherd University classes, and ability to receive transcripts will be revoked.
Students with overdue materials and outstanding balances will be blocked from registering for classes, and transcripts will not be released until all financial obligations are met. Once the student has returned all overdue items and paid all outstanding library fines and fees, the library will release all holds. Students should allow one business day to release a hold after all fines and fees have been paid.
Lost or Damaged Items
The patron will be billed the replacement charges imposed by the lending institution. No refund will be given for materials returned after a lost charge is paid.
