SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University invites the community to participate in this year’s Relay for Life on April 12.

The University and Jefferson County are again partnering to host the event through the American Cancer Society (ACS).

“This event means so much to our community,” said Melanie Ford, principal systems analyst in the division of student affairs. “The effort of our students and community to attend, donate, and spread awareness will help cancer survivors across our county, region, and nation.”

ACS provides resources to cancer patients and their families.

Come enjoy engaging with Shepherd students and community members who will be hosting fund-raisers and fun activities around the Relay track.

Funds raised through Relay for Life events support those resources and fund critical cancer research.

Participants will also experience local food trucks, engage in fundraising activities, and experience educational activities centered around resources and research related to cancer. There is an atmosphere of fun and celebration during Relay events when members of the community will be walking laps in honor, memory, and support of our friends and family who have or had cancer.

The Jefferson County Relay will kick off at noon with opening ceremonies with any cancer survivor and their caregivers invited to a dinner held in their honor at 5 p.m.

Everyone comes together again at 7 p.m. for the heartwarming Luminaria Ceremony.

Participants can purchase a luminaria in honor, memory, or support of a loved one to be displayed during the ceremony.

Closing out the evening with a final ceremony at midnight.
