SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Spring break creates an opportunity for students to unwind after the stress of midterms.

One dedicated group of Shepherd University students recharged by helping those in need through Alternative Spring Break.

This annual initiative lets Shepherd students engage in a week-long service program during spring break.

This year, the group partnered with the Appalachia Service Project, an organization dedicated to home repair and replacement in Central Appalachia.

The students traveled to Jonesville, Virginia, where they worked to improve the living conditions.

Students tackled critical home repair projects, including installing new flooring, plumbing, insulation, and underpinning the home to provide a safer and more stable living environment.

For freshman Mary Mauney, it was unlike anything she had ever done.

“ASB was such a life-changing experience,” Mauney said. “It pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me the true meaning of service, friendship, and community.”

That’s a common reaction to ASB according to Jackson Heath, the coordinator for student community services and special initiatives in the division of student affairs.

“Our students came back with a deep appreciation for the impact they can make through service,” Heath said. “Their [the students’] efforts not only enhanced the physical structures but also brought hope and relief to the homeowner they served.”

Freshman Shreya Upreti said taking part in the service project is something she will always remember.

“Renovating a home for someone in need was really rewarding, and what made it unforgettable was the amazing group of people I went with,” Upreti said. “The bonds we formed and the difference we made this trip very special.”

Heath said the group faced unexpected challenges, but through problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork, they adapted quickly to complete the repairs.

Despite the challenges, Mauney said giving back through ASB was incredible and something everyone should try.

“I would definitely encourage others to participate,” she said. “It was truly an unforgettable week.”
