SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Board of Governors has approved an increase in tuition and fees, effective starting Fall semester 2022. This is the first in-state tuition increase in three years. The University will increase full-time tuition and fees by $249 per semester for both in-state and out-of-state undergraduate students.

Undergraduate in-state tuition will increase from $3,892 to $4,141 per semester (an increase of 6.4 percent) and undergraduate out-of-state tuition will increase from $9,112 to $9,361 per semester (an increase of 2.7 percent).

In-state graduate tuition will increase by $15 per credit hour (from $485 to $500), and the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree will increase by $40 per credit hour (from $727 to $767). Out-of-state graduate tuition will remain $717 per credit hour.

The Board also approved an average increase of 2.7 percent in room rates for most Shepherd residence hall options. Traditional housing option rates—Shaw and Thacher halls—will not increase. Meal plans will increase an average 3.4 percent across the three options.

When considering the rate increase, Board members reviewed market research and economic trends, including comparisons of tuition, housing, and meal plan costs to those costs at other universities in surrounding geographic areas. With the significant increase in inflation affecting all aspects of daily living, the tuition increase was a reluctant move that was deemed necessary.
