Coronavirus leads to cancellations, postponement of events

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University is canceling or postponing a variety of events that are scheduled to take place over the next two weeks after deciding to extend spring break through March 27 due to the coronavirus. In addition, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) board of directors has decided that, effective, Friday, March 13, the PSAC and its member institutions, which includes Shepherd, will suspend all athletic competition for the remainder of the spring semester.

The Phaze 2 gallery exhibit with sculptor and printmaker Lauren Koch that runs until April 13 will be accessible to community members or students by appointment only starting Monday, March 16, until further notice. The March 26 artist’s reception has been canceled. For more information, contact Evan Boggess, gallery manager, at eboggess@shepherd.edu.

The March 24 President’s Lecture, “Is History Relevant,” with Dennis Frye, has been rescheduled for November 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium.

Other events that have been postponed and will be rescheduled in the future include the March 24, Faculty Research Forum with Dr. David R. Hixson titled “Unreal Archaeology: Combing Aerial Drones, Digital Animation, and Dirt Archaeology to Recreate Ancient Landscapes” and the World Water Day Celebration sponsored by Shepherd University International Affairs; the March 26 Salon Series concert with Robin Rhodes and Friends sponsored by Jefferson Security Bank and the School of Music; the March 28 Human Performance Lab open house; and the Rude Mechanicals Medieval and Renaissance Players, two medieval comedies, “Joseph’s Wedding” and “Mankind” that were scheduled March 26, March 27, March 28, and March 29.

The School of Music Symphonic Band Concert planned for March 27 has been rescheduled for April 17 as part of the Wind Ensemble concert. A recital by David Schaeffer scheduled for March 29, has been moved to April 19 at 5 p.m. The School of Music Visitation Day and Monday Morning Musicale originally scheduled for March 30 have been moved to April 13.

Canceled events include the March 14 SAT test; March 16 Regional Math Field Day, sponsored by RESA VIII School District; the March 26 dual enrollment information night; and the March 28 admissions open house, which will be presented virtually to those who signed up.
