SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Submissions for the “Anthology of Appalachian Writers” published by Shepherd University and the West Virginia Center for the Book is Wednesday, November 15. This year’s anthology will center on the work of Wiley Cash, the 2017 Appalachian Heritage Writer-in-Residence at Shepherd and recipient of the Appalachian Heritage Writer’s Award.

The anthology publishes original works of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, essays, and photographs of the region that capture a sense of Appalachia. Submissions that have some connection to the work of Wiley Cash will be given some preference.

Cash’s latest novel, “The Last Ballad,” the story of the Gastonia Mill Wars of the 1920s and the shooting of union organizer Ella May Wiggins, is typical of the working class novels that Cash writes. His “Land More Kind Than Home” was the 2017 West Virginia Common Read and a New York Times Best Seller.

Those interested in submitting to the anthology should see submission details at the anthology website: http://www.shepherd.edu/ahwir/anthology-of-appalachian-writers. Submission forms and original creative work should be sent to Dr. Sylvia Bailey Shurbutt at sshurbut@shepherd.edu before the November 15 deadline.
