SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The School of Music will host a visitation day on Monday, October 9, open to all high school seniors and juniors and transfer students who are interested in pursuing a music degree at Shepherd.
Students will attend classes, meet faculty and students, visit with representatives from the Office of Admissions, hear ensemble rehearsals and performances, have lunch in the Rams Den, and take a guided campus tour. Visitation day offers an opportunity for students to live a “day in the life” of a Shepherd music student and learn about the audition and application process. Interested parents are also welcome to attend. There is no cost to participate.
Shepherd offers offer three music degrees—a Bachelor of Music in Performance, a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in music. The School of Music has a mission to challenge its students to reach their potential by providing extraordinary experiences, including performance opportunities in four choirs, wind ensemble, wind symphony, orchestra, chamber groups, two jazz bands, an opera performance, , and marching band. Students can study with the region’s most experienced performers and educators and master classes are regularly offered with nationally acclaimed guest artists.
Many music alumni have gone on to prestigious graduate schools that include Peabody, Northwestern, Ithaca, Eastman, Arizona State, and Manhattan School of Music. Some have starred on Broadway and in world tours, become recording artists, and joined nationally known ensembles, including the United States Navy Band and The Sea Chanters. They also hold teaching positions in institutions of learning all over the country, including at elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools.
The Music Education program has had a 100% placement rate since its inception in 1950, and music education students learn to conduct by directing ensembles in real concerts, not lab ensembles in student recitals.
Shepherd’s School of Music tuition is affordable—costing half of what comparable private universities and conservatories charge for out-of-state students, and less than 20% for in-state students.
Auditions for admission and scholarships for the School of Music will take place on January 27, February 10, and February 24, 2024.
