SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Scott Hippensteel, will present “Simple Gifts” on Friday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Frank Arts Center Theater. The concert will feature “Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs,” a suite of American folk songs set by Frank Ticheli. A pre-concert lecture describing the works in the concert program will begin at 7 p.m.
Other selections include “Bullets and Bayonets,” a John Philip Sousa march; “Frenzy,” a fast-paced overture depicting the chaotic pace of life by Andrew Boysen Jr.; “Forgotten tales of the West,” a tribute to the Indigenous people and pioneer settlers of the Old West by Adrian Sims; “With Quiet Courage,” a gentle yet powerful ballad by Larry Daehn; “Albanian Dance” by Shelley Hanson; and selections from “Les Misérables,” an arrangement by Warren Barker of five songs from the famous musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg.
The Symphonic Band provides quality large ensemble music making experiences through the performance of significant wind band literature. Membership is open to all University students regardless of major and auditions are not required. Additionally, faculty, staff, and community musicians participate.
General admission is $15; $10 for Shepherd faculty, staff, alumni, senior citizens, active-duty military, and ages 18 and under; and free for Shepherd students with a valid Rambler ID. Tickets can be purchased online at shepherdrams.universitytickets.com.
