SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The end of the Civil War in North Carolina was a powerful experience that deeply impacted survivors. Historian Ernest Dollar captured this experience in his new book “Hearts Torn Asunder: Trauma in the Civil War’s Final Campaign in North Carolina,” in which he recounts the events and impact of the war’s chaotic finale on soldiers and civilians and how it shaped the rest of their lives.
Dollar will share details from his book on Wednesday, November 9, at 7 p.m. in the Shepherdstown Public Library, 145 Higbee Lane, Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The presentation is sponsored by Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War and is free and open to the public.
A North Carolina native, Dollar earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and Bachelor of Fine Arts in design from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and Master of Arts in public history from North Carolina State. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve/North Carolina National Guard from 1993-1999. Dollar has worked in several historic parks in both North and South Carolina and currently serves as the director of two museums in Raleigh, North Carolina: the City of Raleigh Museum and Pope House Museum.
