Come join the Jefferson County Reading Council and Shepherd University for the Annual Literacy Leaders Conference. A teacher-friendly conference, this professional development event offers a wide variety of sessions that focus on literacy across the curriculum and in the real world.
Content will be offered in Early, Elementary and Secondary Education.

Katie Madrid Bio
Wright Denny Intermediate, Jefferson County Schools
Katie Madrid is the music specialist at Wright Denny Intermediate School in Charles Town, West Virginia. Madrid teaches general music, recorders, ukuleles, as well as directs chorus, an Orff instrument ensemble, and musicals to third, fourth, and fifth grade students. In 2002, Madrid received her Bachelor of Art degree in vocal and instrumental music education for pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade from the college of Alderson Broaddus in Philippi, West Virginia.
Growing up in Jefferson County WV, Madrid was inspired by her teachers and parents to become an educator. She believes in pouring back into the community that invested in her. Madrid resides in Charles Town with her husband, Nathan Madrid, and their four children who are all enrolled within Jefferson County schools. Madrid is an active WV 4-H All-Star and Jefferson County club leader, a worship team singer and connect group leader at her church Crossroads in Martinsburg WV, and a newly inductee of the WV Eta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Throughout her career, Madrid has taught in public, private, and homeschool environments within WV as well as Virginia. While in VA, she served as a district chorus chair as well as the VA Elementary Music Educators State Association secretary. Currently she is on the WV All State Children’s Chorus executive board and is a member of her school’s Leadership team. In the spring of 2024, Madrid was awarded Jefferson County School’s Teacher of the Year.
Madrid’s priority in life is to love God and love people which is transfers into her Music classroom. Her goal is striving for each student to be seen, accepted, and loved through building relationships with leveraging music as the tool. She adores teaching Music and considers it an honor to inspire the next generation.
