Shepherd University Model United Nations

Shepherd University Model United Nations (SUMUN) is a class and a club here on campus. In MUN, students learn about diplomacy, conflict resolution and UN-style negotiations through mock conferences held in class. During this time, students have the ability to hone on various skills like public speaking, impromptu speeches, writing diplomatic papers, etc, while learning about the workings of the United Nations (UN). This is a primarily student run organization under Dr. Arend Holtslag’s guidance.

Every semester, students attend a MUN conference as diplomats from an assigned country and UN committee and compete in a simulation of negotiations at the UN. Previous conferences attended have been held in NYC, Washington DC, and North Carolina.

SUMUN is honored to represent diplomats of South Africa and Vanuatu at the upcoming National MUN conference in Washington DC in November 2019.

SUMUN also hosts RAMS MUN, a Model United Nations Conference at Shepherd University, for high school students from the surrounding area. This year’s RAMS MUN conference will be held in October 2019 and will discuss climate change. More information can be found on the RAMS MUN page.
