What to Expect
Spending time in nature while giving back to your community is so rewarding!
Did you know that a majority of the food grown at Tabler Farm goes to people in need? Tabler Farm partners with the Shepherd University Ram Pantry, the Shepherdstown Shares Food Pantry, and the WVU Medicine Farm to You program. By volunteering with us, you not only help the farm, you help all the people who are benefiting from the food we grow.
What will you be doing? Tabler Farm follows standard practices on a small-scale vegetable farm. Volunteers will receive training and guidance on all actives from an employee of the farm. Potential activities include helping with harvesting produce, pulling weeds, planting seedlings, moving compost, and/or laying mulch. Specific activities vary and change by the day and seasons. Volunteers will work directly with a supervisor at all times.
What can you gain from the experience? Shepherd students can count their volunteer hours toward their Service Learning requirements. All volunteers are encouraged to take home farm-fresh produce! Gardening and spending time in nature is proven to be therapeutic by reducing stress levels and improving overall physical and mental health. At Tabler Farm, we encourage all participates to prioritize mindfulness during their time on the farm. This could mean taking breaks when needed, enjoying each others company, using clear communication, spending some of the time in silence, tuning into the vibrant ecosystems around them, and reflecting on their day at the farm.
