Background
Benefits of Fiber Connectivity
- For PERFORMANCE: The Internet2 organization runs a Community of Interest dedicated to the Performing Arts. Their web page lists these resources and more.
- Web pages about LoLa. “With Low Latency video conferencing, teachers and students can perform together in different cities in real-time.“
- A paper about music educated entitled, “What is Internet2 and how can music education programs use it?” (2019) by Christine Senavsky, Carnegie Mellon University.
- Slides about enabling musicians in Spain and Italy to perform together. This 2011 slide show is about LOLA, a project by the GARR consortium.
- For HOME and OFFICE: The city of Frederick Maryland already has fiber for many businesses. Now it is exploring fiber connectivity for city residents. Frederick News-Post story by Ryan Marshall, 2020.
Benefits of Internet2 Membership
- INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS: Internet2 members have access to partner networks including the Canadian research network (Canarie), the European research network (eduGAIN), and other international partners.
- CLOUD SERVICES. Internet2 works with commercial providers to work out procurement needs for academia. I2 gets best in class pricing for Zoom, AWS, Canvas, etc.
Success Stories
- Michigan Tech led the development of I2, using a 2008 grant to connect the northern peninsula with fiber, allowing research and tech education to remain in the region.
- Franklin & Marshal joined Internet2 in 2016. This is a liberal arts college near Philadelphia. The CIO wrote this blog about the benefits.
- Jackson State University in Mississippi, an historically Black college/university (HBCU), joined Internet2 and migrated to cloud services. This gave JSU access to IT expertise at both coasts of US and allowed students to use industry-standard tools. JSU CIO Deborah Dent, who led the effort, has written and spoken about the importance of Internet2 for HBCUs.
Benefits of the NSF CC* Community
- Shepherd’s 2020 planning grant was awarded under the CC* program. This is a National Science Foundation program devoted to building the nation’s cyber infrastructure for research. Being a member of the CC* community has its own benefits.
- The Open Science Grid (OSG) is a computational resource available to all researchers in the USA. The OSG is a distributed computing resource in the cloud backed by physical computers at universities across the USA.
- Trusted CyberInfrastructure (TrustedCI) is devoted to the dissemination of best practices. The organization hosts a monthly webinar series, among other activities.
