Phase 2: Pilot
Advanced Computer Networks
Building high-speed networks for research and education at Shepherd University.
A pilot project Plan for 2022
In early 2022, Shepherd University decided to build its first optical network on campus. Shepherd will start small with a pilot project that connects only a few classrooms in a few buildings. This network, based on high-speed fiber optics, would be used to test and demonstrate its advantages for research and education at Shepherd University.
Implementation phase Begins
In mid 2022, Shepherd sought funding to build its first optical network on campus. US Senator Shelly Moore Capito supported the project through the Congressionally Directed Spending program. In Fall 2022, Shepherd received a $135K grant from the US Department of Education.
With the funding and the plans in place, Shepherd hopes to begin implementation in late 2022 toward an operational pilot in 2023.
